Romário leaves Liberal Party to support Eduardo Paes for Rio governorship
Senator Romário has officially left the Liberal Party (PL) after five years of affiliation. He announced his decision to support Eduardo Paes (PSD) in the upcoming race for the governorship of Rio de Janeiro.
Romário stated that his departure was a result of deep reflection and represents the end of a political cycle, emphasizing that the move is not due to personal conflicts with party members. He intends to remain without a party affiliation for the time being. In his support for Paes, Romário noted that while he and Paes may not agree on all political positions, he believes Paes possesses the best conditions to address the long-standing challenges facing the state.
The shift significantly alters the political landscape in Rio de Janeiro. While Romário aligns with Paes, the PL has nominated Douglas Ruas as its candidate for governor. Additionally, former mayor Rogério Lisboa (PP) has also announced his support for Paes, further strengthening the candidate's coalition in the Baixada Fluminense region.
