Romário leaves PL to support Eduardo Paes for Rio de Janeiro governor
Senator Romário has formally announced his departure from the Liberal Party (PL) after five years of affiliation. He stated that the decision was made after months of reflection and represents the end of a political cycle, emphasizing that the move is amicable and lacks personal conflict with party members.
Romário declared his support for Eduardo Paes (PSD) in the upcoming race for the governor of Rio de Janeiro. He justified the choice by stating that Paes possesses the best conditions to govern the state and address long-standing regional issues. Romário noted that while he and Paes may not agree on all political positions, his priority remains the welfare of Rio de Janeiro.
Following his departure, Romário will remain without a political party for the time being, noting that there are currently no ongoing negotiations for new affiliation. This move shifts the political landscape in Rio, as the PL has nominated Douglas Ruas as its candidate for governor. Additionally, former Nova Iguaçu mayor Rogério Lisboa has also announced his support for Paes, further strengthening the candidate's coalition.
In recent polling by Vetor Arrow, Eduardo Paes leads the spontaneous mentions for the governorship with 28.9%, ahead of candidates like Anthony Garotinho and Douglas Ruas.
