Senator Romário's Salary Garnishment Upheld to Pay CBF Indemnity

The Court of Justice of São Paulo confirmed a ruling that 30% of Senator Romário's (PL‑RJ) monthly salary will be seized to satisfy a moral‑damage indemnity owed to former CBF president Marco Polo Del Nero. The debt, arising from 2013 statements in which Romário, then a federal deputy, said Del Nero should be "imprisoned" and serve "one hundred years in jail," was judged to be about R$ 34.4 thousand. The garnishment amounts to roughly R$ 13.9 thousand per month and will continue until the full amount is paid, with the funds held in a judicial account pending court authorization.

Romário appealed the decision, arguing that the deduction threatens his financial subsistence and constitutes an "irreversible material impact." The appeal was rejected by the tribunal, which found no sufficient evidence of imminent irreparable harm. The senator maintains that his comments were protected by parliamentary immunity, but the court upheld the original damages award and the salary seizure.
