Senator Salyn Buzarquis urges Liberal Party to back Miguel Prieto for 2028

Paraguayan Senator Salyn Buzarquis has urged the Liberal Party (PLRA) to support Miguel Prieto, the former mayor of Ciudad del Este, as a presidential candidate for the 2028 elections.

Buzarquis argued that Prieto is the only opposition figure with sufficient national measurement and potential to realistically compete for the presidency. He criticized other potential liberal candidates, including Central Governor Ricardo Estigarribia, stating they lack the necessary national numbers to win. Buzarquis noted that he personally outperformed several of these figures in the recent Senate elections, questioning how they could achieve the presidency without broader electoral strength.

The senator emphasized that the party must be strategic, focusing on who has a real chance to win power rather than debating whether a candidate must strictly belong to the Liberal Party.
