Senator Victor Umeh warns of AI risks in 2027 elections

Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central, has expressed significant concerns regarding the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) potential use of artificial intelligence in the 2027 general elections. Umeh warned that the deployment of AI could facilitate sophisticated electoral manipulation, specifically citing the risk of creating seamless, fabricated content that could deceive voters.

In addition to the risks posed by AI, Umeh noted that the unresolved technical glitches during the collation of the 2023 presidential election results continue to cause widespread anxiety among Nigerians. He urged electoral authorities and the public to exercise extreme caution and not place confidence in AI-driven processes for conducting future elections.
