Senator Warren demands answers from RFK Jr. over cyclosporiasis outbreak response
Senator Elizabeth Warren has formally demanded answers from HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. regarding the federal government’s response to a massive cyclosporiasis outbreak. The outbreak has resulted in at least 24,000 confirmed or suspected cases across 47 states, with two deaths and 740 hospitalizations reported by the CDC.
The FDA has linked nearly 10,000 cases to recalled iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms, which spans 17 states. Senator Warren raised concerns regarding potential corruption and political influence, noting that Taylor Fresh Foods, Inc. donated $1 million to the pro-Trump PAC MAGA Inc. in March 2025.
Warren also criticized the administration for dismantling food safety infrastructure, citing significant staff cuts at the CDC’s Parasitic Division and the FDA, as well as the relocation of the USDA’s Beltsville Agricultural Research Center. She suggested these policy changes and funding cuts may have hindered the ability to identify and respond to the crisis.
