Senator Zampa criticizes Democratic Party over antisemitism bill
Senator Sandra Zampa of the Democratic Party (Pd) has criticized the party's ongoing internal debate regarding a proposed bill to combat antisemitism in Italy. Zampa expressed concern that the party's indecision, which has lasted since March, risks delegating the fight against antisemitism to right-wing political factions.
Zampa argued that the party is failing to distinguish between political criticism of the Israeli government under Benjamin Netanyahu and the necessary protection of Italian Jewish citizens, who have faced a reported 400% increase in antisemitic incidents. She dismissed claims that the bill, which references the IHRA definition of antisemitism, would restrict the freedom to criticize Israeli government actions, calling such arguments false.
The senator emphasized that the left must remain coherent with its political history and not allow confusion over international conflicts to hinder the domestic protection of Jewish communities from attacks.
