Senators demand explanation from RFK Jr. over task force changes
Seventeen U.S. senators, led by Senator Angus King, have requested that Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. provide explanations by October 15 regarding recent changes to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF).
The lawmakers are seeking clarity on how the federal panel, which determines which preventive screenings are covered without cost under the Affordable Care Act, was restructured. Specifically, the senators questioned the scientific justification for shifting the panel's composition from primary care and prevention experts toward specialists. They also raised concerns regarding the selection process for new members and the transparency of their financial ties.
The USPSTF's recommendations are critical to healthcare access, as an 'A' or 'B' grade from the panel requires most private health plans to cover services such as colorectal cancer, blood pressure, depression, and hepatitis C screenings without a copay.
