Senators Tuberville and Britt back border security bill

U.S. Senators Tommy Tuberville and Katie Britt have announced their support for the Stopping Border Surges Act, a piece of legislation introduced by Senator Mike Lee. The bill aims to combat child trafficking and asylum fraud by modifying federal immigration laws regarding the handling of migrant families and unaccompanied minors.

Key provisions of the act include granting the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) authority over detention decisions for minors who are not classified as unaccompanied children. The legislation would prohibit DHS from releasing such minors to anyone other than a parent or legal guardian who is lawfully present in the United States. Additionally, for parents charged with misdemeanor illegal entry who arrive with a child, the bill directs DHS to detain the parent and child together while legal proceedings are pending.

Supporters of the bill argue that these measures will close loopholes that currently incentivize smugglers to use children to facilitate illegal entry into the country.
