Senatran clarifies CNH renewal rules regarding CPF irregularities

The National Traffic Secretariat (Senatran) has clarified that irregularities in a citizen's CPF (taxpayer registry) with the Federal Revenue Service do not constitute legal grounds for the suspension or cancellation of a valid driver's license (CNH).

Despite this federal directive, many drivers face operational blocks at state traffic departments (Detrans). This occurs because automated systems perform real-time checks against the Federal Revenue database during service requests, such as renewals, duplicate issuances, or category changes. These technical hurdles affect millions of drivers, including approximately 6 million whose licenses are set to expire by December 2026.

Additionally, new regulations for 2026 outline restrictions for automatic CNH renewals. While drivers aged 50 to 69 may access simplified, cost-free renewals under specific conditions, those aged 70 or older must follow conventional procedures, including mandatory medical exams and fee payments. Other groups ineligible for automatic renewal include those with expired licenses exceeding 30 days or those with medical restrictions on their license validity.
