Sendai Zoo Penguin Deaths Linked to Avian Malaria

Four Humboldt penguins at Yagiyama Zoo in Sendai, Japan died within an 11‑day period in July. Laboratory analysis detected malaria parasite DNA in the birds, confirming that mosquito‑borne avian malaria was the cause of death. The zoo immediately halted public display of the penguins, moved the remaining birds to a back‑of‑house enclosure, and began treatment with anti‑malaria medication.

To prevent further cases, the zoo has filled ground depressions, intensified weed removal, improved ventilation, installed large fans, and instituted regular mosquito‑control measures and prophylactic drug administration. Officials emphasized that avian malaria does not affect humans.
