Senedd debate erupts over legality of party switching
A debate broke out in the Senedd regarding the legality and ethics of elected members switching political parties. Jason O’Connell, the MS for Pontypridd Cynon Merthyr representing Reform UK, questioned whether a candidate who is elected on one party's manifesto but subsequently joins another is committing “fraud by misrepresentation.”
The questioning follows the recent defection of Sarah Cooper-Lesadd, MS for Pen-y-bont Bro Morgannwg, from Reform UK to Plaid Cymru. Mr. O’Connell asked the Counsel General, Elfyn Llwyd, if Welsh electoral law provides any legal protection for voters when a representative departs from the political platform they were elected under.
Responding to the claims, Mr. Llwyd dismissed the suggestion, stating he had “never heard such a load of muck” and noted that party switching is not a new phenomenon. He concluded that the matter was a political issue rather than a legal one, stating, “I’m the legal officer. I thank him for that question, but it’s not for me.”
