Senedd debate on face coverings sparks controversy in Wales

A debate in the Senedd regarding whether full-face coverings, such as the burka and niqab, are contrary to ‘British values’ has drawn sharp condemnation from Wales’ deputy first minister, Sioned Williams. The debate was initiated by Reform MS Jason O’Connell, who argued that while Reform supports religious freedom, a line must be drawn where such practices “oppresses women and damages assimilation into Welsh communities.”

During the session, Reform members Francesca O’Brien and Joe Martin supported the call for a ban. O’Brien described the coverings as “anti-British” and argued that certain beliefs are at odds with local history and culture, while Martin characterized the garments as incompatible with “western civilisation.”

In response, Deputy First Minister Sioned Williams accused Reform members of attempting to pit communities against one another for political advantage. The debate also touched upon public safety concerns, including the use of balaclavas by individuals on illegal e-bikes.
