Senedd petition targets illegal waste dumping in Wales

A Senedd petition calling for increased powers for local councils to combat illegal waste dumping has reached its first milestone, securing nearly 900 signatures within two days. The petition, launched by MP Andrew Ranger, seeks to compel the Welsh Government to review the authority local councils hold to prevent land seizures and environmental damage.

The movement follows recent incidents in Coedpoeth and Minera, where residents and councillors have criticized Natural Resources Wales (NRW) for a perceived lack of effective enforcement. Despite NRW issuing a Section 59 notice to halt dumping and mandate waste removal at a site on Talwrn Road, campaigners claim illegal tipping has continued.

Local representatives, including Minera councillor Jerry Wellens, intend to raise these concerns during First Minister’s Questions. While NRW stated they are taking the matters seriously and have conducted site visits and issued notices, community members have staged protests, including dumping samples of illegal waste outside NRW’s Buckley headquarters to highlight their frustration.
