Dakar 2026: Preparations accelerate for Youth Olympic Games

Preparations for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games are accelerating in Senegal. The government has implemented strict deadlines for key infrastructure, including the Olympic Village and the equestrian center, following instructions from President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. While the Iba Mar Diop stadium and the Olympic pool have been delivered, the Olympic Village must be completed by August 15, with keys handed over by August 31.

In sports developments, the pools for the rugby sevens competition have been confirmed. The tournament will feature 16 teams, with the men's competition including Argentina, France, Japan, and Samoa in Group B, and Canada, Germany, Senegal, and South Africa in Group A. The women's competition features Australia, China, Kenya, and Senegal in Group A, while Group B includes Czechia, Madagascar, Spain, and the USA.

Logistical and budgetary measures are also underway. The government has begun the operational phase for the 2027 finance law, focusing on revenue mobilization and expenditure quality. Additionally, roadwork near sporting venues has led to temporary traffic closures in the Point E area of Dakar to facilitate infrastructure upgrades. The Saly Beach Ouest site has also been officially delivered to the organizing committee for beach volleyball competitions.
