Senegal agriculture faces water stress and rainfall irregularities

Senegal is facing significant agricultural challenges due to irregular rainfall and water stress, particularly in the southeastern regions of Tambacounda and Kédougou. The Minister of Agriculture, Cheikhou Oumar Bâ, has conducted field visits to assess the impact of these dry spells on essential crops such as maize, rice, cotton, and millet.

To mitigate these risks, the government is promoting the use of agricultural insurance and encouraging farmers to diversify their crops with more resilient alternatives like cowpea (niébé) and watermelon. Additionally, the Minister has committed to repairing broken agricultural machinery, such as tractors, to support ongoing work.

In response to the hydric stress, the Dynamics for an Agroecological Transition in Senegal (DyTAES) is advocating for increased agroecological practices, including soil and water conservation techniques like mulching and stone bunds, to help stabilize yields and protect food security.
