Senegal and IMF Move Toward New Reform Program
IMF Africa director Zeine Zeidane met with Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye to discuss a new IMF-supported programme. The IMF praised Senegal’s recent fiscal‑management reforms, improved budget transparency and the creation of a unified public‑debt unit, noting the country’s resilient economy with projected 7.9% growth and a shrinking fiscal deficit.
Both sides expressed a rapid convergence of views on concluding a new programme that will preserve public investment, spur private‑sector revival and strengthen social‑protection nets. The forthcoming framework is to rest on four pillars: stronger public‑finance management, inclusive growth, human‑capital development and climate‑resilience. Senegal reiterated it will not pursue a debt‑restructuring, relying instead on its current treatment plan. An IMF mission is expected in Dakar before 30 June 2026 to finalise the programme’s macro‑economic framework and financing needs.
