Guinea-Bissau elections face uncertainty amid technical and political hurdles

The scheduled presidential and legislative elections in Guinea-Bissau, set for December 6, 2026, are facing significant uncertainty. The Vice-President of the National Electoral Commission (CNE), Felisberta Moura Vaz, stated that technical conditions are not currently met to hold the vote.

Additionally, the Prime Minister of the transition government noted that political parties are unprepared, citing a lack of renewed directorates and local branches. This development threatens the central promise of the military junta, led by General Horta N’Tam, to return the country to civilian rule following the November 2025 coup that ousted President Umaro Sissoco Embaló.

In response to the potential delay, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has urged the transitional authorities to engage in broad and inclusive national consultations to ensure a transparent electoral calendar and a peaceful return to constitutional order.
