Senegal and Mauritania coordinate on Grand Tortue Ahmeyim gas field

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye met with Mauritania’s newly appointed Minister of Energy and Petroleum, Mohamed Abdel Vetah, in Dakar to discuss bilateral energy cooperation.

Central to the discussions is the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) offshore gas field, a cross-border hydrocarbon deposit located approximately 120 kilometers off the maritime border between Senegal and Mauritania. The project is operated by BP and Kosmos Energy, alongside Petrosen and the Mauritanian national hydrocarbon company. The field holds estimated recoverable resources of nearly 15 trillion cubic feet.

Following the start of commercial liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments in early 2025, the two nations are focusing on the coordination of future development phases. Discussions include the potential for a second phase to increase annual production capacity to 5 million tonnes and the possibility of transitioning to onshore solutions. Both governments aim to secure public revenues and ensure a firm production schedule from operators.
