Senegal announces public Waqf fund to support social solidarity
Senegalese Prime Minister Ahmadou Alhaminou Lô has pledged state support for the Haute Autorité du Waqf (HAW) following a working session with the institution's leadership. The meeting, which included Director General Dr. Ahmed Lamine Athie and Supervision Commission President El Hadj Amar Lô, focused on two primary strategic objectives: the development of a new strategic plan and the upcoming launch of a public Waqf fund.
The Waqf, which operates under the Prime Minister's office, is a social solidarity mechanism designed to provide sustainable financing for social projects, specifically targeting vulnerable populations. Unlike one-off aid, the Waqf model focuses on preserving capital and utilizing generated income to fund long-term social services, aiming to reduce poverty and inequality. While the government has announced the forthcoming public fund, specific details regarding the launch date and total funding amount have not yet been disclosed.
