Senelec addresses electricity shortages and infrastructure vandalism in Senegal
Senelec, Senegal's national electricity company, is addressing widespread power outages and supply disruptions. Director General Pape Toby Gaye attributed the recent instability to a combination of technical failures and increased consumer demand. Key issues include a 200 MW capacity loss due to a pump failure at the Karpowership floating plant and a turbine malfunction at the Cap des Biches plant.
Logistical challenges have also impacted production. Due to global geopolitical tensions, the Cap des Biches plant has been forced to rely on diesel rather than natural gas. The rapid transfer of fuel from ships without sufficient decantation has led to impurities clogging machine filters, necessitating frequent maintenance. Additionally, Senelec reported that rising consumption levels have led to faster depletion of Woyofal prepaid credits.
Beyond technical issues, the energy sector is facing security threats. The Sudeten union has raised alarms regarding increasing acts of vandalism and theft targeting electrical infrastructure, specifically transformers in areas like Sébikotane and Khodoba. These attacks cause significant financial losses and further disrupt service. Senelec expects a return to normal operations by the end of the week.
