Senegal authorities charge Nigerian national for human trafficking

A Nigerian national, identified as P. Ch. Ogbonna, has been referred to the prosecutor in Senegal following allegations of human trafficking, pimping, and endangering the lives of others. The legal action follows a complaint from a 17-year-old Nigerian orphan, A. Mang, who escaped from her captors and reported the abuse to the Ngor gendarmerie brigade.

The victim reported being recruited in Nigeria with the promise of a job in a clothing store. Upon arriving in Senegal, she was allegedly forced to pay 3 million CFA francs to cover travel costs. The minor, who was pregnant, claimed she was subjected to physical violence, had her travel documents and phone confiscated, and was forced into prostitution in Thiès and Dakar to repay the debt. She also described being held in near-sequestration during the day.

Ogbonna has reportedly admitted to part of the facts while claiming she was also a victim of the same criminal system. This case highlights a recurring pattern in the region where young Nigerian women are lured by employment promises only to be trapped by manufactured debts and forced into sexual exploitation.
