AFCON 2027 qualifiers kick off with mixed results across Africa

The opening matchday of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers has produced a variety of results across the continent. In Group D, South Africa secured a 2-1 victory over Guinea in Johannesburg, with goals from Ime Okon and Kabini, while Seydouba Cissé scored for the Syli National.

In Group J, Senegal's debut under new coach Patrick Vieira ended in a 1-1 draw against Mozambique. Despite a strong first half, the Lions de la Teranga struggled with clinical finishing in the second period.

Other notable results include Angola holding Egypt to a 0-0 draw in Group B, and Niger securing a 2-1 win over Lesotho in Group A. In Group I, Algeria's Brahim Hemdani made headlines by releasing Rayan Aït-Nouri from the national squad following disciplinary tensions.

Elsewhere, Burkina Faso and Benin played to a 1-1 draw, and Congo fell 1-0 to Namibia. The qualifying campaign continues with Matchday Two scheduled for late September and early October.
