Guinea: Mohamed Diané sentenced as President grants pardons to 312 convicts

In Guinea, former Defense Minister Mohamed Diané has been sentenced by the Court for the Repression of Economic and Financial Offenses (CRIEF) to four years and eight months in prison. While the court acquitted him of embezzling public funds, it convicted him of money laundering and illicit enrichment. Diané was ordered to pay a fine of 3 billion Guinean francs and 300 billion Guinean francs in damages to the state.

Special Prosecutor Alphonse Charles Wright has announced his intention to appeal the decision in cassation, contesting the legal reasoning regarding public procurement procedures.

Separately, President Mamadi Doumbouya has issued a decree granting a total pardon to 312 convicts across various Guinean jurisdictions. This pardon is conditional upon the completion of mandatory civic training and social reintegration programs.

In a related legal development, defense lawyers for former magistrate Algassimou Diallo have suspended their participation in his trial before the Supreme Court. The defense cited concerns over the fairness of the proceedings, specifically the rejection of requests to recuse three judges and alleged violations of procedural deadlines.
