Senegal coastline hit by severe weather and boat damage

Severe weather, including heavy rainfall and strong wind gusts, has caused significant damage along the Senegalese coastline since September 24, 2026. Reports indicate that approximately ten boats ran aground between Yarakh and Monaco Beach, and several pirogues were damaged during the storms.

The Ministry of Fisheries and Maritime Economy has mobilized services to conduct a detailed assessment of the damage in coordination with local authorities and maritime professionals. Minister Amy Mara Dièye expressed solidarity with the affected fishing families and stated that the ministry is working to identify urgent interventions and support measures.

In response to the vulnerability of landing sites to swells and rising sea levels, the ministry plans to consult with industry stakeholders to discuss long-term solutions, which may include the development of safer docking areas. Authorities have advised maritime users to exercise extreme caution and follow weather bulletins.
