Senegal President Bassirou Diomaye Faye outlines economic reforms and reparations agenda

On 17 June 2026 Senegal’s Council of Ministers, chaired by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, set a programme of economic revival and social investment. The president urged the rapid clearance of internal debt, the finalisation of a “patriotism economic” law and the launch of the “Sunu Champions” initiative to boost private‑sector financing. A multi‑sector plan for youth employment was ordered, with an urgent inter‑ministerial task‑force to devise a nationwide job‑creation programme.

Key sectoral reforms were announced for fisheries: tighter regulation of industrial fishing, revitalisation of artisanal fisheries and a push for aquaculture development, alongside national “blue‑economy” consultations. The government also pledged to advance the New Deal Technologique, expanding universal internet access and strengthening digital security.

Internationally, President Faye travelled to Accra, Ghana, on 17 June to attend a high‑level consultative conference on the UN resolution on trans‑Atlantic slave‑trade reparations, and will later visit Germany (21‑23 June) to deepen bilateral cooperation. The president’s agenda links domestic economic sovereignty with a broader diplomatic push for historical justice and international partnership.
