Senegal denies abandonment of Grand Transfert d’Eau project

The Senegalese Ministry of Economy, Finance, and Planning has denied rumors that the Grand Transfert d’Eau (GTE) project has been abandoned. While 20 billion FCFA previously earmarked for compensation in the 2026 supplementary budget was removed, the ministry clarified that these funds have been rescheduled.

A sum of 13.8 billion FCFA has been included in the 2027 initial draft budget, a figure that may increase depending on the project's progress. Officials attributed the budgetary shift to delays in the census of affected individuals and the subsequent evaluation of compensation requirements, neither of which has yet commenced.

The GTE is a strategic initiative intended to supply water to several regions, including Louga, Thiès, Dakar, and Diourbel. The project is part of a broader national vision for modern and sovereign water resource management, as highlighted by the Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation at recent international forums.
