Senegal prepares for school reopening amid flooding and health concerns

Senegal is preparing for the 2026-2027 school year amid significant logistical, environmental, and health challenges. The Ministry of National Education has launched a major campaign to distribute school kits—including backpacks, notebooks, and stationery—to students in primary and secondary levels to alleviate household costs. Additionally, large quantities of school furniture are being deployed across 14 academies.

However, the reopening faces obstacles. In Saint-Louis, particularly in the Médina Course and Pikine neighborhoods, heavy rains have left several schools flooded, with stagnant water in courtyards and classrooms. The National Federation of Parents and Students (FENAPES) has requested that the start date be postponed from October 12 to October 19 to allow for cleaning and to ensure student safety amidst predicted heavy rainfall.

Furthermore, the country is managing a health crisis, with authorities reporting 812 suspected cases of diphtheria and 11 deaths. This outbreak has prompted increased vigilance and sanitation efforts within educational institutions to prevent further spread as millions of students return to classes.
