Senegal emerges as a destination for ecotourism and nature

Senegal is emerging as a significant destination for ecotourism and natural exploration, particularly in the Casamance region and near Dakar.

Kafountine, located in Lower Casamance, has become a hub for sustainable tourism. The coastal village is characterized by its 20 km beach, lush vegetation, and active artisanal fishing economy. The daily return of colorful pirogues to the quay provides a major attraction for visitors. Philippe Ndiaga Ba, a consultant in sustainable tourism, notes that the arrival of fishermen and their fresh catches is a spectacular event for many international tourists.

Off the coast of Dakar, the Madeleine Islands archipelago offers a protected alternative for travelers seeking seclusion. Designated as a national park since 1976, the uninhabited islands feature volcanic basalt cliffs and serve as a sanctuary for migratory birds. The area is noted for its internal lagoon, often referred to as a ‘natural aquarium’ due to its clear turquoise waters and diverse marine life, providing a stark contrast to the urban environment of the capital.
