Senegal political tension rises following Faye-Sonko rupture

Senegal is experiencing significant political tension following a rupture between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. President Faye recently addressed the dismissal of Sonko, citing persistent divergences and a breakdown in trust as the primary reasons for the leadership change.

Speaking from Italy, El Malick Ndiaye, the first Vice-President of the National Assembly and a Pastef official, criticized the current state of the country, claiming Senegal is “in pause” and “in danger.” Ndiaye expressed concerns regarding the return of the “old system,” questioning recent administrative appointments and noting a perceived loss of confidence from international donors. He specifically highlighted issues with political “transhumance” and alleged that some officials lack the necessary qualifications for their roles.

These political shifts coincide with economic concerns. The movement Sénégal Biñu Bokk has denounced government austerity measures, specifically regarding public debt restructuring with the IMF and proposed reductions in energy subsidies, which they fear will increase the cost of living for households.
