Senegal electricity crisis causes widespread power outages
Senegal is experiencing a significant electricity crisis characterized by widespread rolling blackouts. Senelec, the national utility, attributes the disruptions to a combination of technical failures, high demand, and fuel supply constraints. Key issues include a 200 MW production loss due to technical problems with a Karpowership vessel and turbine failures at the Cap des Biches plant operated by West African Energy.
Political opposition, led by former Energy Minister Thierno Alassane Sall, has criticized the government's management, alleging that the country has shifted from a net exporter of electricity to a net importer. Sall also raised concerns regarding the inequitable distribution of power cuts, suggesting that Dakar is prioritized over regional cities like Thiès. Additionally, the use of expensive diesel fuel at the West African Energy plant has significantly increased operational costs.
Senelec officials expect the situation to stabilize by the end of the week as repairs are completed and necessary equipment is installed. However, the crisis has placed substantial economic pressure on households and small businesses, particularly during a period of high temperatures.
