Senegal faces looming institutional crisis as President Faye clashes with opposition leader Sonko

Political tensions in Senegal have sharpened between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and opposition figure Ousmane Sonko of the PASTEF movement. Analysts warn that the rivalry could culminate in an institutional impasse, with the president holding the constitutional power to dissolve the National Assembly after November 2026 if parliament, dominated by Sonko’s supporters, repeatedly blocks economic reforms favoured by the International Monetary Fund.

The clash pits Faye’s pragmatic, internationally‑oriented stance against Sonko’s sovereignist rhetoric, which labels the IMF an “imperialist tool.” If legislative deadlock continues, the government may face slowed reform implementation, rising living costs, inflation in food and transport, and broader public discontent. The political stalemate could thus spill over into economic hardship for ordinary Senegalese citizens.
