Senegal faces political tension and economic discussions with IMF

In Senegal, a group of eight government ministers held a press conference to address national concerns regarding the social climate, economic management, and priority state projects. Simultaneously, discussions continue with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and other international donors to stabilize macroeconomic perspectives through budget arbitration and financial execution.

Political tensions are rising as Alioune Badara Mboup, a PASTEF coordinator, criticized President Bassirou Diomaye Faye for supporting Macky Sall’s candidacy for UN Secretary-General. Mboup characterized the move as a communication strategy and warned that associating with the former president could harm the current administration. Meanwhile, Alioune Tine has called for political compromise between President Faye and Ousmane Sonko to address rising social frustrations, youth unemployment, and national debt.

Across the broader West African region, the Alliance of Sahel States (AES)—comprising Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger—continues to focus on military reorganization and territorial security. Niger is pursuing institutional discussions with multilateral lenders while strengthening energy export channels. Regional mediation efforts between ECOWAS and the AES members remain focused on maintaining economic interconnection and the free movement of goods.
