Senegal First Lady distributes flood relief amid branding controversy
Senegal's First Lady, Marie Khone Faye, has conducted a series of field visits to flood-affected areas, including Yoff, Thiaroye-sur-Mer, and the Maristes zone, to provide moral and material support to victims of heavy rains.
As part of the emergency response, Faye announced the distribution of 400 water pumps to assist in evacuating floodwaters. However, the initiative has sparked controversy on social media due to the branding on the equipment. Each pump features a 'Sénégal Solidaire' sticker displaying the First Lady's image and the text 'Motopompe offerte par la Première Dame du Sénégal' (Water pump donated by the First Lady of Senegal).
Critics have characterized the labeling as a personalization of humanitarian aid, arguing it is inconsistent with the current administration's rhetoric. Supporters, meanwhile, maintain that the primary importance lies in the practical assistance provided to families facing displacement and disrupted services in schools and hospitals.
