Senegal Giant Tortoises Restore Sahel Landscape, Halting Desertification

In the Sahel region south of the Sahara, a restoration project introduced 500 giant tortoises (Centrochelys sulcata) to the Senegalese border area. Over five years the tortoises dug extensive tunnels, breaking compacted soil crusts and creating channels that allow rainwater to infiltrate the ground. The resulting soil aeration and moisture retention have transformed previously barren land into green patches, reversing the advance of desertification and providing new vegetation for local communities.

The initiative demonstrates a nature‑based engineering approach, using the tortoises' natural behavior to rebuild ecosystems where conventional tree‑planting failed. By improving soil structure and water availability, the project offers a sustainable model for combating land degradation in semi‑arid regions.
