Senegal government seeks to avert nationwide strike by Front syndical for labour

The Senegalese government met with representatives of the Front syndical for the defence of work (FSDT) at the Ministry of Public Service to avert a planned general strike on 10 July. Minister of Public Service, Labour and Public Service Reform Mamadou Lamine Dianté led the talks, and a follow‑up meeting was scheduled for 9 July.

Union president Mody Guiro rejected the government’s request to suspend the strike, stating that no concrete commitments on the new Labour Code and Social Security Code reforms had been provided. The union insists on written agreements and a detailed minutes of the meeting before any suspension can be considered, keeping the strike order in place nationwide.

The dispute centres on concerns over the handling of fixed‑term contracts and other labour‑market reforms, with the government presenting a progress report on its obligations under the national social stability pact.
