Senegal hosts first UN Day celebrations at Diamniadio complex

The Senegalese government and United Nations officials gathered on October 23, 2026, to celebrate the 81st anniversary of the UN at the newly constructed UN House in Diamniadio. This event follows a June 12 agreement between Senegal and the UN regarding the occupation of the complex.

UN Resident Coordinator Aminata Maiga noted that the new facility is intended to strengthen coordination between various UN entities, including regional offices and the UN Office for West Africa and the Sahel, while bringing them closer to local populations. Foreign Minister Cheikh Niang confirmed that the government is supporting the transfer of personnel to ensure staff have adequate working conditions.

During the ceremony, Minister Niang addressed global technological trends, advocating for inclusive governance of artificial intelligence. He also highlighted Senegal’s ‘New Technological Deal,’ a strategy launched by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye in February 2025, which aims to increase the digital economy's share of the GDP to 15% by 2034 and create 350,000 jobs.
