Senegal inaugurates new TER rail link to Blaise Diagne International Airport

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye is set to inaugurate a new 19-kilometer section of the Train Express Régional (TER) connecting Diamniadio to the Blaise Diagne International Airport (AIBD) on Monday, September 28.

This extension marks the second phase of the rail project, following the initial Dakar-Diamniadio line that began operations in 2021. The new segment traverses the Dakar and Thiès regions, passing through communes such as Sébikotane and Keur Moussa. The infrastructure includes 19 kilometers of UIC track, electrification systems, and seven bi-mode train sets. A dedicated station at AIBD features a 5,000 square meter facility with a passenger terminal and a 300-meter walkway connecting to the platforms.

The rail link aims to alleviate road congestion on the route to the airport, benefiting both travelers and the thousands of employees working at the aviation hub. While the project has seen significant usage, with nearly 100 million passengers transported since the TER's inception, discussions continue regarding the long-term financial balance and the potential for future extensions toward Mbour.
