Senegal modernizes fisheries infrastructure and supports women in Casamance
Senegal is implementing several initiatives to modernize its fisheries sector and support local fishing communities, particularly in the Casamance region. Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Economy, Amy Mara Dièye, has overseen the construction of a new 1.7 billion FCFA fishing quay in Cap Skirring, funded by the Senegal Natural Resource Management Project (SENRM). This infrastructure is designed to improve landing and commercialization conditions.
Under the “Anaré Difal” (Women of the Sea) project, funded by Japan and implemented by the FAO, new processing units are being constructed in Mangacounda, Baghagha, and Fanda. Additionally, equipment for fish processing and conservation, along with new boats for local artisanal fishing committees, has been distributed to improve hygiene, reduce post-harvest losses, and increase incomes for women.
Further efforts include plans to reconstruct the Émile Badiane bridge fish hatchery to boost aquaculture and job creation. In the Kassa islands, the FAO is also supporting women's oyster farming through technical training and equipment to enhance economic resilience and food safety.
