Senegal Justice Ministry Receives Dar Al Istiqaamah Call for Family Code Reform and More Cadis
On 6 August, a delegation from the Islamic organization Dar Al Istiqaamah met with Senegal's Justice Minister Me Moussa Sarr. Led by Dr Cheikh Mohamed Ahmad Lo, the group urged a revision of the Senegalese Family Code, arguing that provisions on divorce and inheritance no longer reflect the country’s social, cultural and religious realities. They also highlighted a shortage of cadis – Islamic judges – in many lower courts and called for increased numbers and better training to improve handling of family and succession cases.
Minister Sarr said he would study the proposals and reiterated the principle that all citizens are equal before the law. The organization also raised concerns about perceived differential treatment of its members in judicial procedures, asking for greater vigilance to ensure fairness.
