Senegal knocked out of World Cup by Belgium after 2-0 lead

Senegal entered the World Cup round of 16 trailing 2‑0 against Belgium until the 86th minute, having dominated the first half with goals from Hamidou Djire and Ismaila Sarr. Belgium rallied with Romelu Lukaku's goal and a header by Jurri Tillemans to force extra time at 2‑2. After a VAR review, a penalty was awarded to Belgium; Tillemans converted in the 124th minute to win 3‑2, sending Belgium to the quarter‑finals.

The loss followed a turbulent year for Senegalese football. Earlier in the season the national team had been stripped of the African Cup of Nations title after a protest‑related walk‑off in the final, and the team’s hopes of a historic World Cup run ended in disappointment.
