Senegal launches national cancer control strategy

Senegal is implementing a National Cancer Control Plan for 2025–2029 aimed at modernizing healthcare infrastructure and improving access to specialized treatments. Supported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the strategy focuses on developing medical expertise and upgrading technical capabilities.

As part of this initiative, 23 Senegalese health professionals have received specialized training in fields including radiotherapy, nuclear medicine, radiopharmacy, and medical physics. To bolster diagnostic and treatment capacities, the country has commissioned a SPECT-CT at the Idrissa Pouye General Hospital and is working toward installing a cyclotron to support nuclear medicine.

Long-term goals include the creation of five new radiotherapy centers and the modernization of existing facilities to ensure sustainable, high-quality care for patients across the country.
