Senegal launches vaccination campaign amid diphtheria outbreak

Senegal's Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene has launched a catch-up vaccination campaign following a diphtheria outbreak that has resulted in 34 confirmed cases and six deaths. The outbreak was first detected on August 1, 2026.

The Kédougou region is the most heavily affected area, accounting for 23 of the 34 cases. Other reported cases include five in Dakar, three in Thiès, and one each in Louga, Diourbel, and Kaolack.

Health authorities have implemented a response strategy involving the treatment of infected individuals, systematic investigations of cases, contact tracing, and enhanced epidemiological surveillance. The vaccination campaign specifically targets children who have not received all recommended doses to strengthen collective immunity and prevent further spread. Diphtheria is a highly contagious respiratory infection that can cause severe complications, including difficulty breathing and damage to the heart or nervous system.
