Senegal lawmakers debate scope of parliamentary inquiries

Debate has emerged in Senegal regarding the scope of parliamentary inquiries into various government and financial dossiers.

Deputy Amadou Ba has opposed calls for new parliamentary commissions concerning ASER and Kosmos Energy. He argues that these matters are already under investigation by competent judicial bodies, specifically noting that the ASER case involving 37 billion FCFA is with the Financial Judicial Pool (PJF), while the Kosmos Energy matter involving 50 billion FCFA is being investigated by the IGE. Ba maintains that the Constitution and the National Assembly's internal regulations prohibit deputies from opening inquiries into active judicial proceedings.

Conversely, the Front for a Popular Anti-Imperialist and Pan-African Revolution (FRAPP) has welcomed the National Assembly's decision to launch inquiries into several other areas, including state property, land issues, and fishing licenses. The group advocates for expanding these investigations to include public debt and the Softcare dossier, emphasizing the importance of transparency and the public's right to be informed about the management of state resources.
