Senegal leads UEMOA microfinance and electronic money markets

Senegal has emerged as the leader in microfinance and electronic money within the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) for 2025. According to data from the BCEAO, Senegal holds 26.5% of regional microfinance assets, totaling 1,234.3 billion CFA francs, and 29.7% of the electronic money market. The country also hosts the highest number of large-scale microfinance structures in the region, with 81 operational entities.

While the regional financial sector shows growth, with the UEMOA banking ecosystem expanding to 493 entities, challenges remain. The microfinance sector has seen a decline in capital ratios, with the average capitalization ratio dropping from 13.0% to 9.4%, falling below the 15% regulatory standard. Only about 50.9% of large microfinance institutions currently meet this requirement.

Additionally, the UEMOA Banking Commission has increased disciplinary actions, issuing various reprimands and fines to credit and electronic money institutions across member states, including Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Benin, and Burkina Faso, to ensure regulatory compliance.
