Senegal lifts freeze on onion imports

Senegal's Ministry of Industry and Commerce has officially lifted the freeze on onion imports, effective August 31, 2026. The suspension, which had been in place since January 16, 2026, was implemented to protect local producers by allowing them to sell their harvests without competition from cheaper foreign goods.

The decision to reopen the market follows an assessment of local stock availability. Authorities aim to ensure a steady supply and stabilize consumer prices, which have seen significant volatility; in Dakar, onion prices per kilogram rose from 800 to over 1,200 FCFA during the period. Import authorizations may be granted through December 31, 2026, under the supervision of the Market Regulation Agency (ARM).

While the move provides relief to importers and wholesalers, local producers face ongoing challenges. Despite a national production of approximately 450,000 tonnes, significant post-harvest losses occur due to inadequate storage infrastructure, with an estimated 30% of crops degrading before sale. Industry representatives have called for continued state support to protect small-scale farmers from large-scale agribusiness competition.
