Senegal marks 66 years since first independent government formation

The date September 17, 1960, holds significant institutional importance for Senegal, marking the official publication in the Journal Officiel of the first government of the independent Republic. While the legal appointment of the administration occurred earlier—with Mamadou Dia being named President of the Council on September 7 and a subsequent reorganization on September 9—the September 17 publication formalized the country's first sovereign governmental architecture following the dissolution of the Mali Federation.

Led by Mamadou Dia, who also served as Minister of National Defense, the inaugural cabinet consisted of 18 ministers. Key figures included Doudou Thiam (Foreign Affairs), Gabriel d’Arboussier (Justice), Valdiodio Ndiaye (Interior), André Peytavin (Finance), François Dieng (National Education), and Joseph Mbaye (Rural Economy). This team was tasked with establishing state institutions and managing diverse sectors such as health, transport, and youth to transition the nation from colonial autonomy toward full sovereignty.
