Senegal mayor warns against postponing or merging 2027 local elections

Magueye Boye, the mayor of Khombole, has warned that delaying the territorial elections scheduled for January 2027 or coupling them with early legislative elections would breach Senegal’s constitutional framework. In a tribune he described such a move as a “fragmentation bomb” that could force voters to cast three ballots in a single day, undermining democratic balance.

He noted the legal incompatibility of the election calendars: municipal and departmental mandates expire by 23 January 2027, while a dissolution of the National Assembly that would trigger early legislative elections can only occur after late November 2026, creating a narrow window. Boye called for citizen and local‑official involvement in any reform and warned that continued blockage of voter‑list registrations could lead to legal challenges. Other civil‑society figures, including Moundiaye Cissé of ONG 3D and Ndiaga Sylla of Dialogue citoyen, have echoed calls for clarification.
