Senegal: Media training for climate reporting amid widespread rain warnings
In Dakar, the organization Citoyens Actifs pour la Justice Sociale (CAJUST) held a workshop for approximately fifty media professionals to improve news coverage regarding climate change, energy transition, and renewable energy. The initiative aims to help journalists better understand public policies and the economic narratives of energy transitions, addressing a need for better pedagogy as climate adaptation monitoring remains fragile in Senegal.
Climate challenges in the region include coastal erosion, soil salinization, recurring droughts, rising temperatures, and rising sea levels. While the Ministry of Environment and Ecological Transition is working to establish a robust monitoring system for the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), data remains dispersed and sectoral indicators are often insufficient.
Separately, meteorological services have issued warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms across much of Senegal. The highest risks are concentrated in the south and east, including Ziguinchor, Kolda, Sédhiou, and Tambacounda. Central regions and the peanut basin, such as Kaolack and Fatick, are also expected to experience precipitation, while the Thiès region and Petite-Côte remain under surveillance.
