Senegal MP Thierno Alassane Sall battles Spanish firm AEE Power over alleged misused electrification funds

Senegalese deputy Thierno Alassane Sall, a former energy minister, continues to accuse Spanish company AEE Power EPC of diverting public money allocated to the rural electrification program run by the Agence sénégalaise d’électrification rurale (ASER). Sall says the 37 billion CFA transferred in June 2024 was only partly spent on projects, with large portions used to pay legal fees in Côte d’Ivoire and other jurisdictions. He cited bank statements showing three transfers totalling about €56 million after the account held €22,020.

In reaction to Sall’s allegations, AEE Power lodged a complaint against him in Spanish courts, which the MP described on X as an attempt at intimidation, posting “Le vice porte plainte.” He also criticised the company’s “attitude fuyarde,” accusing it of evading Spanish justice while filing lawsuits against him. Sall maintains he has filed his own legal actions in Madrid and promised to keep pursuing transparency in the funding of Senegal’s rural electrification projects.
