Senegal National Assembly schedules key legislative sessions
The National Assembly of Senegal, under the presidency of Ousmane Sonko, has scheduled three plenary sessions between September 29 and October 2, 2026. The legislative agenda includes several high-priority items: the modification of the law regarding ECOWAS biometric identity cards, reforms to the 2019 Petroleum Code, and legislation concerning healthcare in prison environments. Additionally, deputies will review a parliamentary report regarding the marketing of Sofcare products.
This legislative period coincides with significant political shifts following the dismissal of Ousmane Sonko from the Prime Minister position by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye in May 2026. The Assembly is also tasked with examining the 2026 supplementary budget, which was prepared following an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). While the ruling Pastef party holds a significant majority, the Assembly maintains the constitutional power to propose amendments to reduce government spending or increase revenue, potentially impacting the government's fiscal strategy and debt management.
